Disaster Strikes: A Guide to Water Damage Restoration for Your Business

websitebuilder • June 5, 2024

Water damage in your business is a stressful and disruptive event. Whether it's a burst pipe, a leaky roof, or a natural disaster, the immediate aftermath can feel overwhelming. Knowing how to react quickly and take the right steps can minimize damage, save your valuable inventory and equipment, and get your business back up and running as soon as possible.

This guide equips you with the knowledge and resources to navigate a water damage situation in your business effectively. We'll delve into the crucial steps to take, from mitigating the initial damage to restoring your property and salvaging essential items.

Assess the Situation and Ensure Safety

  1. Stop the Source: The priority is to stop the source of the water damage. If it's a burst pipe, locate the shut-off valve and turn off the water supply. If the source is external, like a heavy rain or flood, you may need to wait for the weather to subside before addressing the intrusion.
  2. Turn Off Electricity: Water and electricity pose a serious safety hazard. If possible, shut off the electricity supply to the affected area to prevent electrical shock and potential fire risks. Safety must be prioritized, so only attempt this step if it can be done safely and without further risk of water exposure.
  3. Minimize Further Damage: Once the source is under control, prevent further damage. Move any furniture, equipment, or inventory away from the affected area to minimize water exposure. Cover electronics, sensitive documents, and valuable items with plastic sheeting to protect them from water and moisture.
  4. Evacuate the Area: If the water damage is extensive or poses a structural risk, evacuate your business and ensure the safety of your employees.
  5. Document the Damage: Before any cleanup begins, document the damage extensively. Take photographs and videos of the affected areas, capturing the extent of the water intrusion, damaged property, and any visible structural issues. This documentation will be crucial for insurance claims and repairs later.

Taking Action: Mitigating the Damage

  1. Contain the Water: Use towels, mops, and buckets to contain and remove standing water-work from the edges of the flooded area towards the source to prevent further spreading. A wet vac can be a valuable tool for removing larger quantities of water.
  2. Promote Drying and Ventilation: Open windows and doors to promote natural ventilation and air circulation. If weather permits, use fans to accelerate the drying process. Consider renting dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture from the air and prevent mold growth.
  3. Salvaging Belongings: Assess the salvageability of your belongings. For furniture, remove cushions and prop up legs to promote airflow. Electronics should be left untouched and professionally evaluated for restoration. Paper documents may require specialized drying techniques.

Important Note: Do not attempt to turn on electronics or appliances that have been exposed to water. This can lead to further damage and potential fire hazards.

Water Damage Restoration | Belleview, FL

What Happened After removing the old flooring from a home in Belleview, Florida , the flooring company uncovered water on the slab that was trapped under the underlayment. Unbeknownst to the homeowner, water was slowly penetrating the vertical exterior walls via hairline fractures. Both the cracks in the stucco and in the concrete slab itself were resolved, but the flooring company wanted the concrete slab moisture levels below a specific percentage. What We Did Florida tends to have elevated levels of humidity, including Belleview, Florida. To increase the drying efficiency, we sealed all the windows throughout the house with 4 mil plastic to prevent any moisture penetration. We placed a Phoenix DryMax XL Pro dehumidifier and a Dri-Eaz Stealth AV3000 axial air mover in each room. We also implemented the use of a heater to increase the internal temperature slowly to draw the moisture out of the concrete.
